Brazil saw off the challenge of a slightly disappointing Chile to seal a mouth-watering quarter-final tie against the Netherlands.
The Selecao defeated Chile 4-2 and 3-0 in World Cup qualifying - and Dunga's team eased to a comfortable victory at Ellis Park on Monday as their opponents became the first South American team to be eliminated from the competition.

Brazil boss Dunga has been heavily criticised back home for constructing a team that values efficiency ahead of flair, but his side controlled the vast majority of the match and were comfortable winners.
Chile, as with Mexico against Argentina on Sunday, really took the contest to their opponents in the opening minutes.
Marcela Bielsa's side have won many admirers in South Africa with their quick-fire, skilful brand of attacking football, but apart from a weak Humberto Suarez shot that Brazil keeper Julio Cesar easily collected they had little end product to show for their bright start.
Brazil, with Dani Alves superb on the right of midfield, gave Chile no room to breathe and gradually took control of the contest.
They should have been awarded a penalty when Lucio was brought down by a late tackle from Pablo Contreras, but eventually took the lead through Juan's header from Maicon's corner.
The Brazil defender was left unmarked - and his perfectly placed header clearly rattled Chile, whose increasingly erratic passing prevented them from picking any holes in their opponents' defensive structure.
The tie was as good as won when Brazil scored their second just four minutes after Juan's header, with a goal of breathtaking movement and precision.
Robinho cut inside before playing a square ball to Kaka, who delivered a beautifully weighted first-time pass that Luis Fabiano, in an onside position, collected before easing past Claudio Bravo and slotting into an empty net.
The striker almost doubled his tally with a glancing header that flew wide, but Robinho sealed victory just before the hour mark with his precise finish after the impressive Ramires finished a surging run with a accurate pass. Ramires was later booked and will miss the match against the Dutch.
Bielsa had made all three substitutions with 30 minutes remaining as he chased the game and Jorge Valdivia almost pulled a goal back with a clean strike that narrowly flew over the crossbar shortly after his introduction, while Julio Cesar denied Suazo, who later clipped the crossbar.
Brazil slowed the pace of the contest but attacked in occasional devastating bursts that saw Robinho twice come close to a second goal.
He had an angled strike saved by Bravo and later slotted beyond the Chilean keeper, but was denied by a marginal but correct offside decision.
It made no difference to the outcome of a tie already over, but the five-time world champions will face a stiffer test against the Dutch in Port Elizabeth on 2 July.

He is supposed to have a suspect hamstring but there seemed no problem as he sped down the wing before cutting inside in trademark fashion and drilling a low drive into the bottom corner.Robben's brilliance left Slovakia with a mountain to climb. They stuck to the task well and showed admirable spirit and commitment, but Van Marwijk's side were always in control and seemed content to protect their lead, even if their lack of desire to kill the game off will be of slight concern to supporters.
They had to rely on a mistake from Jan Mucha to allow Sneijder to make it 2-0 on 82 minutes and even though Vittek pulled one back in stoppage time there was no way back for the Slovakians.
Manager Vladimir Weiss will be disappointed but he shouldn't be. Slovakia over-achieved to get beyond the group stage and the memories of beating current holders Italy can be cherished forever.

Dennis Rommedahl scored one goal and set up another as Denmark made the Indomitable Lions the first team knocked out of the tournament. In the process, the Dutch became the first nation to advance after they beat Japan 1-0 in Group E, then waited a few hours for the evening result.
And while the result went Denmark's way, it was hardly what the Danes had in mind.
"When we finished the game we knew it was a really bad game," Daniel Agger said. "Especially the first half, we gave too many opportunities away. We didn't play like a team. We didn't play like we have to play if we want to progress in this competition. Clearly it wasn't good enough, but if you can win on days like that, it's positive."
Rommedahl charged down the right wing and spun around Jean Makoun before hitting a well-aimed shot past goalkeeper Hamidou Souleymanou in the 61st minute.
Rommedahl had assisted on the equalizer after Samuel Eto'o put Cameroon ahead in the 10th minute following a mix-up in the Danish defense.
Nicklas Bendtner tied it in the 33rd after receiving a feed from Rommedahl following a superb long pass by Simon Kjaer.
"It was a tough game until the last minute," Rommedahl said. "We had a terrible start. But we created a lot of chances in the second half, when it became a more open game."
Eto'o scored early after a meltdown in the Danish defense.
Christian Poulsen rolled the ball toward fullback Kjaer, but the pass was way too soft and intercepted by Achille Webo. He found Eto'o unguarded in front of the net. Cameroon's top striker easily beat goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen with a powerful low shot.
The Danes replied just after the half-hour mark. Kjaer sent a long diagonal pass from deep inside the Danish half down the right flank to Rommedahl. The winger let the ball bounce off his chest, looked up to find Bendtner rushing toward the goal, and struck a low cross that the Denmark striker poked in with his right foot.
Both teams had a flurry of chances before the break, with Eto'o hitting the post and Achille Emana zigzagging past three defenders but shooting straight at Sorensen.
Cameroon pressed for an equalizer, but Alex Song and Webo shot over the net, and Sorensen protected the Danish lead when he stopped Emana's right-footed shot with a one-hand save in the 77th.
"It is doubtless a serious disappointment for us and the Cameroonian nation as a whole," Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen said, adding he won't resign. The team "will play for the honor of the country" in the final match against the Netherlands, he said

Wesley Sneijder scored the only goal Saturday and the Netherlands beat Japan 1-0, its second straight World Cup win and the second time the Dutch couldn't produce the kind of offensive show they were expected to bring to South Africa.
Sneijder's 53rd-minute strike finally broke through a Japanese defense that had stifled Oranje creativity in front of 62,010 fans at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
"Why do we focus on good soccer instead of winning?" Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk said. "Let me assure you that we really, really want to win and if we can do that in style, then great. But you have to be able to win ugly games."
Despite scoring just twice themselves so far in the tournament - the Dutch got an own goal in their 2-0 win over Denmark - they will advance to the knockout phase of the tournament if Cameroon and Denmark tie later Saturday.
Striker Robin van Persie missed chances for the Dutch before finally setting up Sneijder's goal. He laid the ball back and the Inter Milan midfielder fired a powerful right-footed shot that goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima could only deflect into his net.
"We pressed in the second half and got a goal," Sneijder said. "This is the kind of game (when) we maybe could have got two or three goals, but we won it and that's great."

Japan responded by going on the attack and Yoshito Okubo had two shots in quick succession, the first saved by Maarten Stekelenburg and the second over the bar.
Substitute Ibrahim Afellay came close to doubling the Dutch lead in the 84th and again in the 88th minute when he twice bore down on the Japan goal, but he was foiled both times by good saves from Kawashima diving at his feet.
Japan nearly made the Netherlands pay for those misses in the final minutes when substitute Shinji Okazaki latched onto a deep cross at the far post but shot just over the bar.
"It shows you there are no easy games. Look at France and Germany," Van Marwijk said, referring to the World Cup losses for the European powerhouses.
The Netherlands is a two-time World Cup finalist - losing in 1974 and 1978 - while Japan's best finish was reaching the round of 16 when it co-hosted the tournament with South Korea in 2002.
The win set a new record of 10 straight victories for the Netherlands in World Cup qualifiers and finals matches - a run that includes eight qualification matches and its two victories in South Africa.
It also extended the Dutch record of never losing to an Asian team. It has now won eight matches and tied one against Asian opponents.
The Netherlands controlled possession - particularly early in the match - with Rafael van der Vaart, Dirk Kuyt and Van Persie all switching positions across the midfield to confuse Japan's defense.
Kuyt had the most spectacular Dutch effort before the break, a bicycle kick in the 10th minute after a cross from Giovanni van Bronckhorst, but defender Yuji Nakazawa headed the effort clear.

Ghana found a way back into the match 14 minutes later. Anthony Annan’s shot would have burst the back of the net, but the ball struck Harry Kewell on his right arm. The Australian forward denied it was deliberate, but Italian referee Roberto Rosetti disagreed, awarding a penalty and showing Kewell the red card. Asamoah Gyan, who had scored from the penalty spot against Serbia, confidently slotted it home again.
Despite the one man advantage, the Black Stars – so lively and inventive in their 1-0 victory over Serbia – were oddly passive. Instead it was Australia, who defended in numbers and occasionally launched swift counter attacks, that looked more likely to score a winner.
Scott Chipperfield headed over when he would have been expected to hit the target and Kingson did well to block Luke Wilshire’s shot after Lee Addy had given the ball away on the edge of his own area.
As the second half progressed Ghana became more adventurous, but their attacks still tended to break down outside the area. Frustrated, the African side resorted to ever more ambitious long range efforts although it wasn’t until stoppage time before a shot from Quincy Owusu-Abeiye seriously tested Mark Schwarzer in the Australian goal.
Ghana’s coach, Milovan Rajevac, brought on Inter Milan’s Suller Muntari for the final 20 minutes, but the African Nations finalists still lacked a spark of creativity in midfield. The Black Stars have been Africa’s most impressive side so far in this tournament, but they will need their best performance yet next Wednesday if they are to ensure a place in the second round.

Lukas Podolski had a chance to equalize for Germany, but failed to convert a penalty, and Serbia held on for three points.

After losing their opener, Serbia ousted group leaders Germany today. Miroslav Klose was sent off in the first half, and just over a minute later, Milan Jovanovic scored the only goal of the match. Lukas Podolski had a chance to equalize from the penalty spot early in the second half, but his effort was saved by Vladimir Stojkovic.
After emphatically winning their World Cup opener against Australia, Germany lined up exactly as they had in their previous encounter. Miroslav Klose, who was on target in that match, retained his starting role in attack, supported by Mesut Ozil, Thomas Mueller, and Lukas Podolski.
The opening round was less pleasant for Serbia, who lost 1-0 to Ghana. Radomir Antic made three changes to his previous starting lineup: in central defense, Neven Subotic replaced the suspended Aleksandar Lukovic; in holding midfield, Zdravko Kuzmanovic started ahead of Nenad Milijas; and Milos Ninkovic started on the right wing in place of previous striker Marko Pantelic. Nikola Zigic started alone up front in a 4-5-1 formation.

From the opening kickoff, Serbia played a high-intensity, tight marking system that afforded the Germans very little time on the ball, forcing hurried passing. To their credit, the Serbs started off well moving forward, although Zigic appeared isolated in the penalty box.
After a cagey start, the Germans found their passing rhyth, and Lukas Podolski nearly punctuated a good attacking sequence with a thundrous volley after Nemanja Vidic cleared Philipp Lahm's cross. The German winger sliced his shot just a hair wide of the left post.
The Serbs responded just moments later as the impressive Milos Krasic crossed to Ninkovic, who had a free volley at the ede of the 18-yard box, but missed over the bar.
Opportunities on goal came at a real premium from both sides. Ozil and Mueller, who were brilliant against Australia, were stymied by Kuzmanovic and Kolarov. Meanwhile, Krasic looked bright for Serbia, but his indirect style, coupled with the isolation of Zigic, resulted in the Serbs ultimately creating very little in terms of goal scoring.
If the game needed a goal, referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco appeared ready to have his part in forcing one. The Spanish referee was very unforgiving in the opening minutes, issuing four bookings within the opening 22 minutes.
It took half an hour for Germany to put the ball into the net, but as he struck, Klose was flagged offside. Bastian Schweinsteiger was just a moment late in his delivery as his Bayern Munich teammate began his run.
Two minutes later, Krasic stormed towards the penalty area before being upended by Lahm, who may have prevented a goal at the expense of yet another booking which was probably the first foul truly worthy of a yellow card.
The referee's liberal interpretation of the rules for carding was always going to have its effect on the match, and surely enough, it took just 37 minutes for Klose to be sent off. Chasing Dejan Stankovic in his attacking half, the veteran striker was sent off after committing a foul.
It took just seconds for Serbia to capitalize on their numerical advantage. After Krasic beat Holger Badstuber to the right byline and crossed, Zigic headed down for Milan Jovanovic, who struck home from close range to put the Serbs ahead.
Germany had a chance to respond just before the break, but were ultimately denied. After a corner was mis-cleared, Sami Khedira's volley struck the underside of the crossbar, and Mueller's overhead volley was cleared off the line.
Serbia entered the break in full control of their destiny, though somewhat rattled after nearly conceding the equalizer. Germany, on the other hand, entered the locker room with their work cut out for them.
At the start of the second half, the two sides took to the pitch unchanged. Podolski made clear his intent by flashing a shot wide of the right post. The Koeln striker, and Germany as a whole, came out much better after the break, with Ozil finally probing the Serbian defense with his trademark through balls.
For all their good attacking movement, the Germans lacked venom in front of goal. That reality was accentuated in the 60th minute, after Germany finally caught a break. Like Kuzmanovic in the previous match, Vidic was penalized for taking a cross down off his outstretched arm. Podolski stepped up to take the penalty kick, but Vladimir Stojkovic guessed correctly, and saved to his left.
The penalty miss seemed to take the steam out of Germany's sails, and also forced Loew to push his team forward. The Serbs had an excellent chance to put the game away in the 67th minute, when Krasic first beat Badstuber before setting up Jovanovic, whose shot struck the left post.
As full time approached, the Germans threw in the kitchen sink, replacing Ozil, Mueller, and Badstuber with Cacau, Marko Marin, and Mario Gomez. Serbia were well organized in defense, leaving their opponents with very little space to use, and absolutely no chance to counterattack.
Instead, Serbia had the better chances to score next. First, Krasic set up Zigic to head off the top of the post, then substitute Gojko Kacar volleyed over the bar after Zigic teed him up.
The result of today's match leaves Germany and Serbia tied on points in Group D with three apiece. Germany are slightly ahead, with a +3 goal differential, while Serbia are at 0 after winning and losing 1-0 in their first two matches. Depending on the result of today's match between Ghana and Australia, we may be set to see a thrilling conclusion to Group D. As the results stand, Germany and Serbia both need to win their respective matches to have a chance of winning their group.

A stirring second-half comeback kept alive USA's hopes of progressing into the last 16 – but they left Ellis Park bemused, confused and more than a touch angry after what looked like a perfectly good late winner was ruled out.
The team, having recovered from a two-goal half-time deficit, looked to have gone ahead four minutes from time when Maurice Edu poked home Landon Donovan's free-kick. However the Malian referee, Koman Coulibaly, spotted an infringement — although much to the frustration of the USA, he refused to explain what it was.
"I'm assuming it was a foul somewhere, it certainly wasn't offside," said Donovan, one of the players that crowded Coulibaly after the final whistle. "I just saw a normal free-kick and a goal. I don't know how much English he speaks but we asked him numerous times in a non-confrontational manner to explain his call but he just ignored us – or maybe he just didn't understand."
The USA coach, Bob Bradley, was also uncertain why the goal was disallowed. "One theory is that a Slovenia player had his arms around Michael [Bradley] and he tried to get loose and was called," he said. "But from what I've heard there were three fouls in the box, all from Slovenia players."
Still, USA will take enormous amount of pride from a performance that kept them in the competition. Slovenia were much the better team in the first half, and deservedly went in front when Valter Birsa drifted in from the right, turned and — spotting Tim Howard off his line – curled a left-footed 25-yard shot high into the net. Howard, who received a painkilling injection before the game, was beaten again just before half-time when Milivoje Novakovic's pass dissected the dawdling Oguchi Onyewu and Zlatan Ljubijankic coolly slotted home.
Bradley the coach responded by bringing on Edu and Benny Feilhaber at half-time – and immediately saw his team pull a goal back when Donovan seized on a mistake from Bojan Jokic, ran into the box and, from a tight angle, hit his shot hard at the Slovenia goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, who seemed to flinch as the shot missed his head and went into the roof of the net. "If there had been an option I would have rolled it across the goal but there wasn't so I decided to hit it hard," explained Donovan. "I don't think the keeper wanted to get hit."
That goal revitalised the large US support and the chants of "USA! USA!" were heard above above the wailing lament of the vuvuzelas. Led by the immense Jozy Altidore they continued to press and missed several chances to equalise before Michael Bradley levelled the scores in the 82nd minute. "We started the match poorly," said Donovan. "We were tentative. We sat too deep. At half-time we spoke about believing we can do it. My guess is that there's not many teams that could have done what we did in the second half."
"This team has shown it keeps fighting to the end," added Bradley. "It's a credit to the mentality of the players, that they are willing to fight for 90 minutes. There was one moment in the second half it seemed like one point gained, and another when it felt like two points lost."
The Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek, meanwhile, was happy with the result despite losing a two-goal lead. "We have gained a point today and we are in a really good position," he said. "I was expecting their comeback because they are physically very able, but I was hoping we would hold on."
Slovenia know they will probably need at least a point against England next Wednesday to qualify for the knockout stages. But for now Kek is not thinking about what lies ahead. "We have squandered a lot of energy, we need to recover and then we will talk about England," he said. "But it is clear what we are up against."

Greece came from behind to defeat Nigeria in a pulsating match that kept alive their hopes of qualifying from Group B.
It was the first victory for Greece at a World Cup and came after a contest that was completely transformed by the dismissal of Nigeria's Sani Kaita after 33 minutes.
Nigeria, who like Greece had lost their opening match in South Africa, had taken an early lead after Kalu Uche's free-kick from a wide area eluded everybody.
And the Super Eagles had a firm grip on the game until Kaita foolishly kicked out at Vasileios Torosidis after both players had briefly tangled as they tried to win the ball.

Greece coach Otto Rehhagel, who presided over his team's stunning victory at Euro 2004, quickly grasped the opportunity by adopting a more attacking formation and was rewarded with a crucial victory.
A deflected strike from Dimitrios Salpingidis drew his side level before Torosidis struck the winner after the break to severely dent Nigeria's hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.
The Super Eagles, who are managed by Swede Lars Lagerback, are pointless and play South Korea, who defeated Greece, in their final match.

Greece, who now have three points, take on an Argentina side that are on the brink of qualifying after winning their first two matches.
Rehhagel's team lined up with three central defenders, two full-backs and two deep sitting midfielders - and until the dismissal of Kaita after 34 minutes it seemed that their only attacking ploy was to try to win a set-piece in a dangerous area.

Skipper Georgios Karagounis delivered cross after cross after free-kick into the Nigeria area, with recalled defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos a frequent target.
It was stale, unimaginative and one-dimensional, while Nigeria showed glimpses of precise attacking play and deservedly took the lead.
Greece keeper Alexander Tzorvas clearly thought the unmarked Peter Odemwingie would make contact with Uche's cross but the Lokomotiv Moscow striker missed the ball, which continued on its trajectory before nestling in the far corner of the net.

There was little sign of a Greece comeback until the dismissal of Kaita, who appeared to be in tears as he made his way off the pitch.
Within minutes Rehhagel had replaced the defensive Sokratis Papastathopoulos with Celtic forward Georgios Samaras.

Greece were instantly transformed - and soon cut open a stunned Nigeria defence, with a deft lay-off from Konstantinos Katsouranis playing Salpingidis through only for Vincent Enyeama to block the striker's shot.
Lukman Haruna cleared an effort from Samaras off the line but, on the stroke of half-time, Greece scored their first ever goal at a World Cup through Salpingidis's deflected strike.
Lagerback tried to bolster his side by replacing Odemwingie with Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi at the start of the second half and playing two banks of four, with Yakubu as the lone striker.
But Greece continued to threaten, with an unmarked Karagounis wastefully heading wide and Kyrgiankos forcing a save from Enyeama.
Greece really should have scored through Theofanis Gekas after an awful header from Joseph Yobo gifted him a gilt-edged opening - but his shot was saved and Nigeria broke with devastating effect.

Ogbuke Obasi slipped the ball to Yakubu, who drew a brilliant one-handed save from Tzorvas. The rebound fell to Ogbuke Obasi, who contrived to miss a sensational opportunity to restore his team's lead.
It was a pulsating passage of play that was greatly appreciated by a far-from-full Free State Stadium - but it was hardly a fair reflection of how the match had developed.

Greece were in the ascendancy and although Enyeama palmed clear a header from Torosidis he was partially at fault for Greece's winner.
The keeper could not hold a low strike from Alexandros Tziolis, with Torosidis pouncing on the rebound to spark huge scenes of jubilation.

Enyeama made two decent saves in the remainder of the game, denying Karagounis and Tziolis, but Greece held on to end a sequence of four successive defeats at the World Cup.

Sure, they looked a little wobbly at the back but they were a joy to watch going forward and, in the middle, bringing in Maxi for Veron proved a canny decision by manager Maradona. "Great passing skills from Argentina," concludes Mark Rodriguez before providing this accurate comparison. "I think the difference between them and Spain, is not passing skill, but the Argentinians' movement. Spain was passing around, but with very little running movement. Argentina's attacks come at pace. So you have the crisp, lightning-quick passing between players who are running at you. Spain was passing and passing and passing, but in small triangles, with their opponents all set up to defend.
I will be very disappointed if Spain do not go through (because they have the skill and play a beautiful game), but it will be their own fault."

Chile ended a wait of almost half a century for a victory on the world stage by defeating Honduras 1-0 in their opening Group H game in Nelspruit.
If there was a touch of fortune about Jean Beausejour's 34th-minute winner -- Roger Espinoza's attempted clearance striking him as the pair slid in to meet a cross -- it was the least Chile deserved for an impressive attacking display that had Honduras on the ropes for much of the 90 minutes.
For Chile, it was a victory exactly 48 years in the making -- the South Americans had not won a FIFA World Cup match since defeating Yugoslavia in the match for third place on home soil on this very day in 1962. Moreover, they had never won outside their home continent but they showed here just why they were strong enough to finish second in South American qualifying.
Facing a Honduran side making their first finals appearance since 1982, Marcelo Bielsa's men hit the ground running, dominating possession in the opening half-hour and pinning Honduras back. Matias Fernandez sent a free-kick dipping on to the roof of Noel Valladares' net after just three minutes and La Roja's quick passing soon led to several half-chances. Arturo Vidal drove in a long-range shot that Valladares required two attempts to hold, then sent a header over the crossbar from a corner. In between they opened up the Honduran back line with one swift passing exchange only for Jorge Valdivia to overhit his final ball to Beasejour.
Bielsa's men gained their reward for an impressive start after 34 minutes. It was a nicely worked goal, if fortuitous in the final execution. Chile's pinball passing created a gap for Mauricio Isla to break clear on the right side of the penalty box and fire in a low cross to the near post. Although Espinoza got a stretched leg to the ball first, it bounced up against Beausejour and deflected into the net.
Chile kept coming forward, with Sanchez driving in a shot that struck the hand of Maynor Figueroa. There were few glimmers of hope for Reinaldo Rueda's Honduras at the other end. Ramon Nunez finally called Chile custodian Claudio Bravo into action on the stroke of half-time, dipping in a free-kick that the goalkeeper tipped over.
The attacks kept flowing toward Honduras's goal in the second period. Sanchez should have added a second just after the hour when Valvidiia played him in down the right, only for the Udinese winger to drag his shot wide of the far post. Valladares then made a superb diving save to foil Waldo Ponce's close-range header, stretching out his right hand to block the ball when the defender looked certain to bury Vidal's header across goal. Next it was Figueroa's turn to rescue his side with a goal-saving challenge on Mauricio Isla. When Valdivia did find the net he was offside but one goal would be enough for the impressive, inventive Chileans.

Defending champions, Italy kicked off their World Cup campaign with a draw against a dogged and determined Paraguayan side on Monday. The match was played out on a windy and rainy night at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town.
Italy have gone into this tournament with an aging team many have criticized as being too similar to the one that won the last World Cup Final four years ago. Paraguay meanwhile, have entered the tournament without their star player, Salvador Cabanas who barely survived being shot in the head at a Mexico City night club back in January. However Paraguay do benefit from having the firepower of recently naturalized Bundesliga striker, Lucas Barrios at their disposal.

Italy appeared dominant as the match got under way and seemed to maintain possession without too much trouble from the Paraguayan midfield. Yet despite the Italians starting on the front foot, Paraguay, who defeated Brazil and Argentina in qualifying, appeared fairly comfortable clearing away Italian threats at they materialized.
Still, it was mostly one way traffic in the early stages of the match. While the Italians, who were without the benefit of their injured midfield maestro, Andre Pirlo, struggled to create chances, they seemed to have no problem containing Paraguay in their own half.
The match stayed fairly tightly wound for the first twenty minutes. But at the midway point it began to take on a more open character with end to end action that saw both sides creating if not chances, at least near chances.

In the 28th minute the Italians set up camp in the Paraguayan half when they won a free kick followed by a pair of corners. However Paraguay proved that they were capable of handling sustained pressure from the champions and the half hour mark arrived with neither side having mounted a serious threat on goal.
But then in the 39th minute, Paraguay took a quite unexpected smash and grab lead when they delivered on a set piece that was essentially the first real chance of the match. Awarded a free kick from distance, the ball was fired into the area by Torres and decisively headed home by Antolin Alcaraz, who left Italian keeper Gianluigi Buffon looking absolutely flat footed.
Paraguay were emboldened by the goal and suddenly began to take control of the match. Still despite some good pressure, the half ended with Paraguay up 1-o.
The Italians started the second half with their backup keeper Federico Marchetti coming on for Buffon who, accordingly to various reports, suffered either a back or a hamstring injury in the first half. Paraguay very nearly doubled their lead in the 55th minute when Vera fired a venomous shot that went just over the far corner of the bar. A minute later, Italy in another lightning counterattack registered a shot on goal when Montolivo fired one straight at Villar from just outside the area.
As the game neared the hour mark the Italians seemed to be hitting their stride and the possibility of an equalizer began to feel imminent. Subbed on for Claudio Marchisio in the 59th minute, Mauro Camoranesi made an immediate impact when he fired a deeply penetrating cross into the area, forcing Villar into action again.
Paraguay made their first substitution a minute later bringing Johnathon Santana on for Torres whose ball in had created the match’s only goal thus far. The first yellow card of the match was shown to Paraguay’s Victor Carere a minute later for a wreckless challenge on Montvilo.
The Azzurrri at last found their equalizer in the 63rd minute when Villar botched a save on an Italian set piece that was duly booted in by De Rossi. Paraguay almost managed an immediate response a few moments later, as Barrios cut one back for Santana who put his shot wide of goal. Paraguay made their second substitution in the 69th minute, bringing Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz on for Nelson Valdez.
Camoranesi was also shown a yellow card in the 70th for a nasty challenge on Vera.
With twenty minutes to go the match truly seemed as if it could go either way. However as the clock wound down the two defensively minded sides seemed ever more content to circle the wagons in an effort to hold onto their share of the points.
Italy very nearly took the lead in the 83rd minute when Montolivo fired a shot on goal from distance that forced a quality save from Villar. But as the final whistle blew both teams had to settle for a share of the spoils. This tie sets the stage for an interesting dynamic in Group F which also contains New Zealand and Slovakia.

Dutch National team started the competition at the World Cup with victory. Although the Dutch team was playing without their biggest star, Arjen Robben, they defeated Denmark with 2-0 score.
Although the Danes played very well in the first half, at the very end they unhappily received a goal, it was an own goal in the 46th minute of game which was scored by Simon Poulsen.
In the second half the Netherlands national team players played much better, and it was only a matter of time when the second goal will be achieved. It happened in the 85th minute of match, and the scorer was Dirk Kuyt.
It is to note that this was the first match at the World Cup 2010 in which both teams were from Europe.

Japan beat a lacklustre Cameroon 1-0 in Bloemfontein through a Keisuke Honda goal to notch their first ever World Cup victory on foreign soil.

The Blue Samurai, struggling for goals in the run-up to the tournament, took the lead in the 39th minute and held on for the remainder of the match despite increasing pressure from the African side in the second half.

Neither side looked capable of breaking the deadlock in a scrappy first half in which clear chances were in short supply until Daisuke Matsui manoeuvred the ball onto his left foot and delivered an inswinging cross from the right.

The ball somehow eluded several Cameroon defenders and the unmarked Honda stabbed it past the despairing dive of Hamidou Souleymanou to give Japan the lead.

Four minutes after the re-start Cameroon went close to an equaliser when Eric Choupo Moting fired wide following good work on the right by Inter Milan star Samuel Eto'o.

It was the first significant contribution from three times African player of the year Eto'o, who struggled to make an impact on the game after being deployed in a deep-lying role.

Despite a more open game in the second half, the goalkeepers remained relatively untroubled in the early stages.

As Cameroon continued to press for an equaliser they threw on Achille Emana, Mohamadou Idrissou and veteran Geremi but could still not find a way past the dogged Japanese defence.

Japan came close to doubling their lead as time ran out, with substitute Shinji Okazaki, on for Matsui, hitting the post after a fierce shot by captain Makoto Hasebe was parried by Souleymanou.

With just five minutes remaining Stephane Mbia let fly with a thunderbolt from 25 yards that rattled the Japan crossbar but they could not find a way past Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima.

Pierre Webo got his foot on a cross as the clocked ticked down but Kawashima made a fine scrambling save.

Earlier, in cool conditions at the high-altitude Free State stadium the crowd whipped up a lively atmosphere despite banks of empty white seats but neither side could settle into a rhythm.

Japan's goal came moments after Cameroon hit the first shot of the game on target, with Eyong Enoh hitting the ball straight at Kawashima.

Japan next face group favourites the Netherlands on Saturday after the Dutch earlier beat Denmark 2-0 in Johannesburg to take an early lead in Group E

Germany provided a real signal of intent with a thrilling demolition of 10-man Australia to get their 2010 World Cup campaign off to a flying start.

Coming into the tournament without injured talisman Michael Ballack, doubts over the future of coach Joachim Loew and the second-youngest squad in the competition, many might have expected Germany to struggle in South Africa.

But if their effervescent display in Durban is anything to go by, the three-time champions could be real contenders for the title come 11 July.

Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose continued their remarkable scoring record at international level with a goal apiece to take their joint tally to 88, Thomas Mueller and Cacau added the gloss, while in playmaker Mesut Ozil they appear to have found a real superstar.

They were aided by the harsh dismissal of Australia's key man Tim Cahill, given a straight red card for a clumsy but hardly malevolent challenge on Bastian Schweinsteiger on 55 minutes.

Germany, though, had given notice of their attacking class long before that.

Klose has already been denied by Aussie keeper Mark Schwarzer when Podolski drilled in the opener from Mueller's cross, and moments after Klose had wasted another glorious chance, poking wide from eight yards, the Bayern Munich man nodded in Phillip Lahm's delicious cross to make it 2-0.

In fairness, Australia had the odd half-chance, Jason Culina heading a Brett Emerton cross over and Richard Garcia sending a snap-shot past the post - while a second-half appeal for handball against Per Mertesacker in the box might have warranted closer inspection.

But what Germany lacked in defensive strength, they more than made up for in pace, power and technique up front.

Ozil twice had the chance to get on the scoresheet having been sent through one-on-one, his first effort cleared off the line by Lucas Neill and his touch failing him the second time.

And then came Cahill's sending off, after which Germany's domination was absolute.

Schwarzer did his best to keep the score down, saving twice from Klose, and once apiece from Sami Khedira and Podolski as Germany tore through the Australia defences time and again.

But the Fulham keeper could do little about Germany's third, Mueller tucking in off the post from the edge of the area, and even less about their fourth, substitute Cacau tapping in from Ozil's centre.

Loew took the opportunity to rest the likes of Klose, Ozil and Podolski thereafter and, as a result, the Germans were unable to maintain their fluidity in attack in the closing stages.

Australia even carved a late chance for a consolation, Nikita Rukavytsya volleying straight at keeper Manuel Neuer from Scott Chipperfield's cross.

However, the Germans work had long been done at that point and they saw the match out in comfort to take top spot in Group D and serve warning to their rivals in South Africa.

In a game that did not offer much excitement, and in which Algeria was slightly better in the first part of the match, Slovenia earned three points and took first place in the group C.
The only goal on the match scored captain of Slovenia, Robert Koren, after shooting from a distance, and helped with Jabulani ball, which has bounce and cheated the goalkeeper of Algeria, who was pretty good in today’s match.
Last 15 minutes of the match Algerina team played with ten players, because Abdelkader Ghezzal after only 20 minutes of game earned two yellow cards and has to left the game.

Los Bafana Bafana logaron adelantarse a la vuelta del descanso con un golazo de Siphiewe Tshabalala, pero al final les tocó lamentar la falta de acierto de Katlego Mphela en este partido cuando el defensor azteca equilibró el marcador.
La selección mexicana llevó la iniciativa del juego en el primer tiempo. También creó la primera gran ocasión de gol en una buena internada de Giovani dos Santos que Aaron Mokoena llegó a tapar con muchos apuros en los primeros compases del encuentro.
El joven delantero azteca fue quien creó más peligro en el área sudafricana junto con Guillermo Franco, que entraba por la izquierda con mucha facilidad, y a punto estuvo de inaugurar el marcador tras una asistencia de Carlos Vela. El portero Itumeleng Khune pudo tapar el remate. Los Bafana Bafana apostaron todo al contragolpe y pero a su delantero Mphela le faltó suerte para culminar sus llegadas... toda la noche.
Llegan los goles
Esa suerte cambió en el arranque de la segunda mitad. Kagisho Dikgacoi marcó una diagonal perfecta que encontró el desmarque de Tshabalala, quien se fue en velocidad y batió a Óscar Pérez con un impresionante disparo cruzado que se coló por toda la escuadra (1-0, 55').
Khune se lució luego en la réplica rabiosa de Dos Santos sacando el balón con una palomita. Javier Aguirre decidió entonces tirar de galones para levantar el partido y dio entrada a Cuauhtemoc Blanco en lugar de Vela. Aún así, fue la portería del Tri la que se vio con más problemas ya que Mphela y Teko Modise pudieron sentenciar tras quedarse mano a mano con Pérez.
Los aztecas lograron recuperarse a tiempo. Rafa Márquez encontró la espalda a Mokoena para culminar con comodidad el pase de Andrés Guardado (1-1, 79'). El defensor anotó su segundo gol mundialista, el segundo consecutivo, además, después de haber cerrado la cuenta mexicana en Alemania 2006, en los octavos de final ante Argentina.
De ahí al final, el partido se convirtió en un ida y vuelta, con muchos espacios. Y Mphela lamentó por tercera vez, al estrellar en el palo un veloz contragolpe en el que superó en carrera a Francisco Rodríguez.
México jugará su próximo partido ante Francia en Polokwane el 17 de junio a las 20:30 (hora sudafricana) mientras que Sudáfrica se verá con Uruguay en Tshwane/Pretoria , el día 16.

GULP - 05 giugno 2010 — With Italy suffering an embarrassing defeat to Mexico during the week all eyes were on Marcello Lippi's to see how they would bounce back in their last friendly encounter before flying out to South Africa.
Gokhan Inler opening the scoring early on when he made the most of some standing off by the Azzurri to bury a strike inside the post. La Nazionale came fighting back however and it was Fabio Quagliarella who leveled the scoring when his header went in off the post.
During the second period the visitors enjoyed more of the possession but neither merited the victory as they both failed to create any clear cut chances to score. The Azzurri went away with a well fought draw and went some way to regaining pride following their disappointing defeat two days earlier.
Switzerland started strongly and gave Italy an early scare when Lazio wing-back Stephen Lichtsteiner whipped an inviting ball into the danger zone. Giorgio Chiellini scrambled clear the danger at the back post.
The Azzurri looked rather shaky in the middle and the absence of the injured Andrea Pirlo only seemed to make matters worse.
On 10 minutes the Swiss broke the deadlock when Udinese's Inler launched a pinpoint drive into the bottom corner. At first glance it seemed as if Federico Marchetti should have done better at his near post, but the error was originally forged by Riccardo Montolivo who backed off his marker on the edge of the box.
The Fiorentina man made up for his shortcomings just four minutes later when he provided the assist for the Italians leveler. Montolivo planted a quick cross into the path of Quagliarella, and the Neapolitan did wonderfully to find the far post with a tricky headed finish.
Shortly after Switzerland almost restored their lead when Valon Behrami was given time and space to shoot from 20 yards. Fortunately for Lippi's side the West Ham man could only blast into the path of Gianluca Zambrotta who deflected the danger away from goal.
On the stroke of halftime Italy almost got their noses in front when Giampaolo Pazzini lunged into the path of a loose ball at the back post. The Doria hitman went agonizingly close to making contact, but he couldn't stretch the final inch necessary to tap the ball into the back of the net.

Carlos Vela and Alberto Medina exposed a slow, ragged Italy defense to give Mexico a 2-1 victory over the defending World Cup champion Thursday.
Vela took a high pass from Giovani Dos Santos in the center and without any serious challenge lined up a drive from 12 yards that gave goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon no chance in the 16th minute.
Ten minutes from the final whistle, substitute Medina beat Italy's offside trap, and from a tight right angle beat Buffon.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque made nine changes to the starting XI that took on Saudi Arabia last Saturday, with Cesc Fabregas the highest profile inclusion as he slotted in to the centre of midfield.
But just like it was against the Saudi's, La Furia Roja started slowly and it was the South Koreans who had the first crack at goal after seven minutes but Jae Sung's long range effort was easily saved by Pepe Reina.
The Liverpool shot stopper had to be alert again moments later when he rushed off his line to intercept a long ball from Chung-Yong, and just minutes after that, Jung Woo almost opened the scoring when his low piledriver from 20 yards out flashed just inches wide of Reina's right post.
Spain's most threatening player was undoubtedly Jesus Navas, who marauded down the right flank countless times but his crosses into the box failed to find his intended target.
By the 20th minute, the European champions started to control the game with their usual patient passing build up. And they carved out their first chance on 22 minutes when Andres Iniesta toe-poked a through ball to Mata, but the Valencia forward had the ball robbed off him just as he was about to pull the trigger. Llorente then headed over from a Fabregas freekick, but it was Cesc himself who had the best chance of breaking the deadlock in the 34th minute.
A brilliant passing move between Joan Capevila and Mata opened up a clear view on goal for Fabregas, but the Arsenal captain's shot from the edge of the box clipped the top of the bar. Five minutes later, Fernando Llorente dragged his shot through a crowd of defenders wide after good work by Fabregas.
Jesus Navas had a chance himself on 40 minutes when he breezed past two defenders down the right channel and let fly with a shot from a tight angle which just smacked into the side netting.
But it was the Asians who almost took a lead right at the end of the half. First, Chu-Young's dash towards goal was smothered by Reina in a one-on-one, before the Spanish custodian flapped away Chung-Yong's lob from the follow up.
That was Reina's last contribution in the game as La Roja coach Del Bosque sent in Victor Valdes for the second half, while his counterpart Jung-Moo did likewise as he replaced Woon Jae with Sung-Ryong in goal for the Koreans.
Spain again started the half sloppily and the Taeguk Warriors almost stunned their European rivals two minutes into the restart. An error by Raul Albiol allowed Chu-Young to ghost in behind the backline, but he miscued his volley right in front of goal and Valdes had the easiest first touch of the game as he collected comfortably.
With the Spaniards struggling to impose themselves in the second period, Del Bosque threw in his big guns as Xavi, David Villa, Xabi Alonso and Pedro were all introduced.
Javi Martinez should have scored for Spain on 67 minutes when Jesus Navas and Xabi Alonso combined to tee up the Athletic Bilbao midfielder, but he ballooned his shot from 12 yards out. Navas then carved out an opening for himself when he checked past his marker and powered into the box, but his low shot from angle was kept out by Sung-Ryong's kick-save.
With eight minutes remaining, South Korea almost scored. Sung-Yong's set-piece deliver found Jung-Soo, but his header just flashed wide of an open goal after Valdes came to claim but was beaten in the air.
Straight to the other end, Sung-Ryong made a stunning reflex block to deny David Villa, but the South Koreans failed to clear their lines as Jesus Navas picked up the rebound and drilled in a sensational 25-yard screamer right into the top corner to put Spain ahead.
Neither side pushed too hard after that and the solitary strike from Navas proved to be the winning goal as La Roja picked up another marginal victory ahead of the World Cup finals.

In a final warm-up before the World Cup kicks off, the United States and Australia faced off in Roodepoort, South Africa. Due to a mild ankle sprain, the Americans were without striker Jozy Altidore. In his stead, coach Bob Bradley started in-form striker Edson Buddle alongside Robbie Findley. Central defender Oguchi Onyewu was also out of Bradley's lineup, making way for Clarence Goodson.

By contrast, Australia coach Pim Verbeek sleected the same squad that featured in Tuesday's 1-0 victory over Denmark.
The match could hardly have started better for the United States. After just four minutes, Buddle caught Vincenzo Grella looking at his feet, and dispossessed the central midfielder. The 29-year old dribbled forward and unleashed a powerful strike, beating Mark Schwarzer from 18 yards.
Australia continued to struggle to pass in their own half, and the American strikers' intensity. Findley should have made the score 2-0 within a quarter hour after beating the Aussies' offside trap and rounding Schwarzer, but failed to get his hips around the ball, and fired wide.
The Americans' loss would be Australia's gain. In a quick response, Cahill flashed an effort just wide, and the Socceroos began a bright spell of pressure. After 19 minutes, Australia won a corner, and Cahill found himself free to tap in at the far post.
After equalizing, the Australians pushed forward with tails raised. Suddenly the US had trouble passing out of their own half, and the script was flipped. The AFC's best team in qualifying failed to take advantage, however, and the US recovered quickly.
After 26 minutes, the Americans broke forward with a gorgeous counterattack, and Clint Dempsey found himself a stride clear of defender Craig Moore. The Fulham attacker aimed a low strike towards the right post, and Schwarzer did very well to parry wide of the right post.
The Americans finally restored their advantage after the half hour point, after some impressive work from Steve Cherundolo, who freed himself from Marco Bresciano before delivering an inch-perfect cross to Buddle at the far post. The unmarked striker rose and made no mistake as he nodded home to complete his brace.
Mistakes would continue to plague the US, who despite being strong with the ball, looked awfully suspect without it. Shortly after the go-ahead goal, Scott Chipperfield played a fine cross to Joshua Kennedy, who was free on goal after Jay DeMerit lost his footing. The Nagoya Grampus hitman failed to connect properly, however, and missed wide of the right post.
It may have been labeled a friendly match, but today's clash was anything but. After Moore made a poor challenge on Dempsey, the two went head-to-head, and earned a booking apiece.
The first half ended with both sides having made numerous defensive errors. The US was more impressive in attack, but relied on two mistakes to create their goals.
At the start of the second half, Bradley replaced Howard with Marcus Hahnemann, and Verbeek added firepower by substituting Carl Valeri in place of Cahill.
The Aussies started well, but their lack of a quality poacher would again deny them an equalizer. Chipperfield played in another dangerous cross that the American defenders failed to clear, and Kennedy, unmarked at the far post, sent the ball into orbit.
Four minutes later, the United States had put the ball into the net for a third time. Following a well weighted through ball from Donovan, Buddle pulled Schwarzer out of his goal and crossed for Findley, who fired off the crossbar with the goal wide open. Michael Bradley stepped up to volley the rebound on goal, but Schwarzer saved directly into the air. Dempsey finally netted with a diving header, but the play was called off apparently due to Findley's offside position.
At the other end, DeMerit made another mistake, heading his clearance freely into the centre of the penalty box. Hahnemann was forced to make a reflex save, but did well to keep the ball out of the net.
By the midway point in the second half, the Aussies had effectively neutralized the Americans' attack, and while they had difficulty playmaking, still had their share of opportunities from set pieces. Following a 63rd minute corner, Chipperfield was found open at the far post, but Hahnemann made another excellent save from close range.
